Ambassador's Biography

Ambassador Murat Salim Esenli was born in Ankara on March 23, 1962. He graduated from Ahmet Vefik Paşa State Elementary School in 1973, TED Ankara College in 1980. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the American University in Washington, D.C. on Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics and Government (CLEG/SGPA) in 1984; and his Master of Arts degree on International Relations, International Law and the US Government in 1999 from the Saint John’s University in New York as a Pope Paul VI scholar.

He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey in 1984 and the synopsis of his assignments is as follows:

1984: Attaché, Third Secretary at the Bilateral Economic Relations with the Middle East and Africa Department,

1984-1985: Third Secretary, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Foreign Minister H.E.Mr. Vahit Halefoğlu.

1985-1986: Served in the Army as a Tank Commander at the Etimesgut Armored Division and later assigned to the Army Headquarters Translation Office in Ankara.

1986-1988: Third Secretary, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Vahit Halefoğlu,

1988-1991: Third Secretary, Second Secretary at the Turkish Embassy in Washington, D.C.,

1991-1993: Second Secretary, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Turkish Embassy in Mexico City,

1993-1995: First Secretary, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Foreign Minister’s H.E. Mr. Hikmet Çetin, H.E.Mr. Mümtaz Soysal, H.E.Mr. Murat Karayalçın, H.E.Late Mr. Erdal İnönü successively,

1995-1999: Counsellor at the Turkish Permanent Representation to the United Nations, New York,

1999-2001: Chief of Staff of the Foreign Minister H.E.Late Mr. İsmail Cem,

2002-2005: Counsellor, Deputy Permanent Representative at the Turkish Delegation to the UN Geneva Office and to the Conference on Disarmament,

2005-2007: Minister Plenipotentiary, Deputy Director General for the Americas,

2007(February-August): Special Advisor to H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül, then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs,

September 2007 to March 2009: Special Advisor to H.E. Mr. Ali Babacan, then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey and the Chief Negotiator for Turkish accension to the European Union.

 

March 2009 to November 2013: Ambassador to People’s Republic of China,

December 2013 to October 2016: Deputy Undersecretary for European Affairs,

3 November 2016 Ambassador designate of the Republic of Turkey in Italy, non resident Ambassador designate to San Marino.

Over the years Ambassador Esenli has delivered lectures on the subjects of diplomatic analysis and information and Turkish foreign policy at the Military Academy in İstanbul, Foreign Studies University (Beijing), Northwest University (Xi’an), Nankai University (Tianjin), Tsinghua University (Beijing), Renmin University (Beijing), Beijing Language and Culture University, Beihang University (Beijing) and Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (Beijing), Okan University (Istanbul) . Ambassador Esenli has also participated in number of TV programmes on international issues. He was appointed as an international consultant of the Asia Fortune Forum.

Ambassador Esenli is married to Evren Esenli, and has three children (Yasemin (1998), Ömer (2000), Selim Ege (2010)). He speaks English and Spanish.
